Rhubarb A concentrate of dietary fibre for intestinal well-being Rhubarb or Rheum officinale belongs to the Polygonaceae family. Nowadays the majority of rhubarbs come from China, Siberia, Mongolia and Russia. Earliest records date back to 2700 BC in China, where its roots were highly prized. The edible part of the rhubarb plant is the petiole or leafstalk, which is traditionally used to make jams.
Liquorice To regulate and soothe the digestive system Liquorice is a perennial plant which grows to a height of around 1 metre, usually in hot regions. A well-known confectionery, the liquorice sticks that we love to suck are in fact made from pieces of the plant's root. Liquorice root contains a number of active ingredients including glycyrrhizin; this gives the liquorice properties known to have a beneficial effect.
Marshmallow A flower with soothing properties Marshmallow or althea officinalis, which is native to Europe, has long been cultivated both for its soothing properties and nutritional value. The sweet fluffy confection also known as "marshmallow" is traditionally obtained from its roots. It is particularly known to soothe the mouth and throat: 0.5 to 15g/day of root).
Black radish A tuber with a distinctive taste! Black radish (Raphanus niger), sometimes also referred to as black horseradish, is a winter radish, usually cylindrical in shape, with a black or purplish skin, whose flesh has a distinctive spicy flavour.
Fibre An invaluable ally in maintaining a healthy digestive system Dietary fibres are macronutrients, nutrients that the body needs to absorb in large quantities, around 2 to 4 g per day. Fibre is primarily found in foods of plant origin, may be soluble or insoluble, and may or may not be broken down by digestive enzymes. The fibre present in rye and wheat bran is essential to good digestion. Prunes, which are high in fibre, can contribute to normal intestinal function (in a dose of 100g/day).
