To regulate and soothe the digestive system
Liquorice is a perennial plant which grows to a height of around 1 metre, usually in hot regions. A well-known confectionery, the liquorice sticks that we love to suck are in fact made from pieces of the plant's root. Liquorice root contains a number of active ingredients including glycyrrhizin; this gives the liquorice properties known to have a beneficial effect on the liver and digestive system. Although famous for its soothing properties, it does however have one drawback which is that glycyrrhizin may cause high blood pressure. It must therefore be consumed in moderation, particularly in the case of people with allergies.
