Blueberries and vision
The European blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a small berry in the Ericaceae family, commonly found in mountain undergrowth. History tells us that British pilots from the Royal Air Force consumed this deep blue fruit in order to sharpen their night vision. It owes its colour to specific natural pigments called anthocyanosides. These blue pigments are powerful antioxidants, believed to protect the retina. Today, the blueberry is known to help maintain good eye health courtesy of its antioxidant and vascular benefits (in a dose of 0.1 to 2g /day of powder) and to support clear vision.
